Inspired by shapes from the natural world and the beauty of the rural Irish landscape I create sculptural pieces, wearable art and interior accessories using wet felting and simple natural printing techniques. Starting with the softest and most tactile of raw materials, un-spun wool, silk and bamboo, I am constantly fascinated by how it is possible to felt strong organic shaped sculptures or soft, flexible wraps and accessories by the simple addition of water, soap and friction from my hands. Since 2012 I have been exploring a natural printing process where silk and hand made felt are wrapped with leaves, onion skins, seed pods, bark and other hedgerow materials. These bundles are tied up tightly then go through a simple heating process to help extract colour directly from the organic matter.

Biography

Since her introduction to felt making in 2007, Nicola Brown has studied extensively in Ireland, Europe and the US to learn new techniques and develop her artistic practice. As a mature student, she chose not to go down the traditional art college route but instead to attend specific workshops, master classes and symposia with international tutors whose work she admired. This is an on-going process. Nicola also delivers regular felting and natural printing workshops in Ireland, Northern Ireland, North America, Canada and Portugal and is the co-author of two felting books. In 2010 Nicola received a bursary from ArtLinks while at the end of 2012 she was chosen, along with North American felter, Dawn Edwards, to take over the reins of the international group FeltUnited.
